Rushall Cricket Club was formed in 1927.

The Move to Carter Park - 1935

Cricket was first played at the top of Stoke Street, Rushall (now called Springfields) before moving to the existing Carter Park Ground in 1935. The ground was named after a Mr Carter, who granted the club the use of the land for as long as cricket was played there. Originally the ground was nothing more than derelict land and earth had to be moved from the top to bottom of the ground to level it. This work was mainly carried out by founder members of the time;

George Cook Horace Lowe Fred Rogers Bill Yates
Howard Moss Harace Pittaway Jack Rodgers Bob Larkham
Ben Pearson Gerald Taylor Frank Jay Jim Taylor
James Dilkes (snr)

Transport in a Furniture Removal Van

All games were friendly matches in those days. For away matches, the team used a furniture removal van from a local furniture shop as very few players had cars. The players would get the card school going as soon as the journey started. Rushall were a decent side then with two teams, the players above were the nucleus of the first team.

Notable new members to join in following years were;

Les Pearson Dr Williams George Duce Dr Rice
Ray Cannon Roy Duce Stan Stackhouse Tom Meek
Alf Beebee Mac Fenton Clarence Hamer Peter Webster
John Webster (snr) Harry Taylor Rev Charles Lewis

Dr Williams became a well known GP in the village.

Tom Meek

Perhaps deserves special mention. He started as a Youth, learning his cricket at Queen Mary's Grammar School, and developed into a fine fearsome fast bowler - and great club member. He became President of the club in the late sixties and continued into the seventies.

Members in the Sixties included:

Russ Strentiford Bob Heath John Bedford Brian Pittaway
John Strentiford Arthur Smith John Maund Mick Clayton
Peter Strentiford Ron Pearce Albert Aldridge Jack Jackson
Ron Challenor John Wiggins Toddy Pemberton Terry Green
Bernard Stone George Horner Jim Dilkes (Junior)

Club Revamped - Late Sixties / Early Seventies

Four or Five club members (Jim Dilkes, Jack Jackson, Arthur Smith, Charles Cook & Jack Pittaway) revamped the clubhouse to enable better use to be made of the club with social eventsand anything else that would raise funds.

Things were similar then to how they are now. The club had little money in the bank, the club lost balls overs the kennels, the relationship with the owner of the kennels was strained.

During this time Charles Cook went cap in hand to Walsall Cricket Club for second hand balls and they obliged.

Rushall accused of killing a foal - Revenge Sought!

During a season when 40+ balls were lost over the kennels / stables, the gentleman who owned the land accused the club of contributing to the death of a foal. To gain revenge he wheel-barrowed the foal onto the ground intending to bury it under the square. Fortunately members stopped him - he did become a member after that !

New members in the Seventies included;

John Rattenbury Ron Horner Will Webster Ray Moorhouse
Ray Whitehouse Dave Collins Steve Bethell Dave Fussell
Arthur Burton (Jun) M.Holloway Andy Macfarlane Keith Cooke
Mick Cooke Steve Cook Paul Adcock K.Hawkins

Dave Fussell became Treasurer and did an outstanding job. Paul Adcock did tremendous work behind the scenes particularly in maintaing the ground.

Thanks to Charles Cook

History to this date has been provided by Charles Cook, who first became a club member in 1934, being brought to matches by his father George. Charles left the club in 1943 but re-joined in 1967 and served spells as Fixture Secretary and 1st XI Captain. He Left the club in 1979 but still comes to watch most matches and son Steve is now playing member, Chairman & former Treasurer. Steve has helped hugely to steer the club successfully through some of its most difficult recent times as you will read below.

An Outstanding Youth Team in the 80's

A successful youth team at this time formed the core of many Rushall teams over the coming seasons. Those still playing at the club include Andy Clayton, Ian Clayton, Mick Fussell, Ian Terry and Nigel Crook. Others who went onto play for many seasons included Mick Storey, John Rattenbury, Steve Davis, Micky Leary and Andy Law.
